Kris Yule
Managing partner at Ryvalmedia Brisbane.
Time in current role/time at the company
We are 18 months old!
How would you describe what the company does?
Ryvalmedia is a digital first, full-service media agency where we combine technology, data, and experience to deliver great performance for clients across the full spectrum of media options.
What do you do day-to-day?
Talk to clients, try not to get in the way of my team doing awesome work.
Define your job in one word:
Interesting rewarding, challenging (too hard to pick one)
I got into advertising because:
I loved the idea of working with some great brands and helping them grow and because it’s a brilliant mix of art and science.
What’s the biggest industry-wide challenge you’d like to see tackled?
The shortage of high-quality talent is the industry’s biggest handbrake right now. Our focus has been on establishing a clear proposition for staff so they can get excited about growing their media career with us. We promise to keep it interesting!
Previous industry related companies you have worked at:
News Corp, JPI Media (UK), Scottish Television, Scotsman Publications
Notable ads/campaigns you have worked on:
Two stand out for me. We ran a brilliant content series for Tourism and Events Qld (TEQ) which, among others, featured Trent Dalton talking about his favourite part of Qld Paranella Park.
Who is/has been a great mentor to you and why?
Steven Walker was my first big boss in media and is still a great sounding-board today. Mark Power has also been an excellent business partner here at Ryvalmedia. It makes such a big difference working with someone who really knows their craft. He’s taught me a lot.
Words of advice for someone wanting a job like yours?
Pay attention to your clients and staff. Mostly, they are both right.
If I wasn't doing this for a living, I'd be:
A commercial pilot.
My mantra / philosophy is:
Luck looks a lot like hard work.
My favourite advert is:
IRN BRU (Fanny) – It’s so Scottish and very funny. It also included competition to win a fridge (Fanny) magnet. Awesome.
Music and TV streaming habits. What do you subscribe to?
Spotify, (helps with air guitar sessions with my daughters in the house) Netflix & Prime.
Tell us one thing people at work don’t know about you?
I can link the Rubik’s Magic rings in less than 5 seconds.
In five years' time I'll be:
Enjoying watching the Ryvalmedia team continue to kick serious goals for clients.
