This fortnight we share the launch of HBO Max in Australia, share key insights into traditional & digital media as reported by Nielsen's 2025 Global Media Planning Guide and explore how Meta's new AI driven ad features can enhance shopping capabilities.

HBO Max Launches in Australia

Warner Bros. Discovery has announced that its streaming service, Max, will launch in Australia on March 31, 2025. The platform will feature content from brands such as HBO, Warner Bros, and the DC Universe. Subscription options include an ad-supported tier at $7.99 per month during the launch period, providing brands with new opportunities to reach engaged audiences. In a key development, Nine has secured an exclusive deal to sell Max’s advertising inventory in Australia, strengthening its premium digital video offering.

This partnership presents a significant opportunity for brands to explore new ad placements and reach targeted audiences through Max’s ad-supported tier.

Nielsen Releases 2025 Global Media Planning Guide

Nielsen published its 2025 Global Media Planning Guide, outlining key trends for advertisers. The report emphasises the need for balance between traditional and digital media, noting that while digital grows (i.e. U.S. streaming now accounts for 40% of TV time), traditional TV remains important in other markets.

While much of media’s growth lies in digital platforms, the present reality is a complex environment where both traditional and digital platforms coexist and serve different viewer preferences. It also highlights the expanding role of retail media advertising, though effectiveness varies by industry, and the importance of analysing competitor spending and leveraging data.

The guide addresses generational shifts in media consumption, where younger audiences favour digital channels, while older audiences prefer traditional TV, requiring brands to adapt and tailor their advertising strategies accordingly.
